Surrounded by some of the most breathtaking scenery to be found in the UK, the Cliff Railway provides a vital and non-exhausting way for locals and holiday makers alike to soak up the peaceful atmosphere and take in the spectacular views as they travel to and from the water’s edge.

Our narrow gauge steam trains give excellent views of the lake amid its surrounding scenery including the nearby mountains of Arenig Fawr, Aran Benllyn and Aran Fawddwy.

The Main station at Burton Shaw was moved from its original location where the railway car park is now to a more sylvan position 30 meters to the North where covered facilities could be provided including toilets and a ticket/refreshments desk. The station boasts a large picnic area and this offers a great vantage point to watch the trains arrive and depart the terminus. The station layout was influenced strongly on the layout of Hythe station on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway including a Signal box and turntable. The intermediate stations of Belvedere and Sitooterie offer walks with Belvedere offering a walk up the ‘Belvedere’ affording generous views across South-East Essex, London and Kent. Sitooterie Halt offers a woodland walk to visit Thomas Heatherwick’s ‘Sitooterie’ sculpture. Angel Green is at the end of the line and the locomotives have to work hard up a long gradient to reach this station. The station it’s self is located next to a small lake and it is a great location to watch the locomotive run around it’s carriages to take the train on its return journey. The journey goes though woodland and gardens with plenty to see on the way including bridges, signal boxes, tunnels and sculptures and the railway operated by a collection of steam and diesel locomotives as well as Electric Multiple Units to which many hint to historic connections to the Essex area.

Built in 1870, it was threatened with demolition in 1991 when the site was closed by British Rail. It was saved by a group of dedicated volunteers who have transformed it into a unique railway museum and events venue. As well as the turntable and shear legs (lifting gear), it has a changing display of steam and diesel locomotives and other rolling stock, an operational signal box, the Roundhouse Halt platform and Springwell Branch running line. Interpretative displays using items from the Museum’s own collection bring the fascinating story of the Roundhouse and the surrounding area vividly to life.

We have a Station Café at the Barry Island Station Buildings, which is open throughout the year from Easter onwards, and our passengers are welcomed to join the Railway at the café where you can purchase tickets for our services. We operate services for passengers on dates throughout the year, using either our own trains, or one of our regular visiting steam locomotives. At Barry we have a heritage 1957 Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU Class 101), called Iris II that we have refurbished and turned into a comfortable passenger environment. We also have a Class 73 diesel locomotive, which can typically be seen hauling Mk 2f passenger coaches.

Barton House Railway is a miniature ride-on railway located in a spacious garden alongside the River Bure in Wroxham. It re-creates a traditional railway atmosphere where the whole family can enjoy the nostalgia of the golden age of steam with two ride-on railways, a working full-size signalling system and authentic tickets. During your visit, you can also explore our extensive museum of railway artefacts with a Midland & Great Northern theme, enjoy homemade cakes and light refreshments by the river and also observe the signalman at work in our full-size original signal box which acts as the control centre of the railway. We operate two separate railways, The Midland Railway (3.5") and The Riverside Railway (7.25").

The Battlefield Line is the last remaining part of the former Ashby and Nuneaton Joint Railway which was opened in 1873. It runs from Shackerstone via Market Bosworth to Shenton in Leicestershire and is operated by the Shackerstone Railway Society. Shackerstone Station is at the northern end of the line, and is the headquarters of the railway with museum, Victorian tea room souvenir shop, loco shed and main rolling stock located here. Beamish, The Living Museum of the North is an award-winning open air museum in the North East of England, which brings the region’s history to life at 1820s Pockerley, The 1900s Town, The 1900s Pit Village, The 1940s Farm and the 1950s welfare hall. Given the location of Pecorama, high on the hillside above the village of Beer, a ride on the railway offers wonderful views over Lyme Bay and along the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to the distant Portland Bill.

Since its opening over 15 million visitors have been captivated by the charm and eccentricity of Roland Callingham’s creation.

The railway operates 7¼ inch scale model locomotives and runs most weekends during the summer. Bentley Miniature Railway offers rides only to Bentley visitors and is subject to a fee of just £2 per person per trip. Bentley, located just 5 miles south of Uckfield, the railway offers views of, what could be considered, the centrepiece of Bentley, the Raymond Erith's Palladian inspired House which remained home to Mary Askew up until her death in November 2008. This includes the formal gardens by Jim Russell which have been developed with the Askew's vision since 1937 to their current standard.

The train departs from Bicton Station and winds its way through the Pinetum, home to many of our champion trees, to Hermitage Station at the far end of the park. From there, it takes you back along the banks of the Great Lake to complete its journey of around 1.5 miles (2.4 km). Custom built for us in 2000, our replica tank engine Sir Walter Raleigh was named after the 16th-century adventurer, who was born near Bicton. The 5.5-tonne loco hauls up to four 24-seater coaches, all of which are roofed to keep you dry on rainy days.

The old railway line is now part of the popular Tarka Trail and so our two sites provide points of interest to cyclists and walkers alike, as well as to the more general visitor. In particular there is a visitor centre, interactive interpretation centre and cafe at Bideford station.

Meet our historic characters who’ll show you what it was like to live and work in one of the first industrialised landscapes in Britain as you explore 26 acres of reconstructed shops, pubs and houses. There’s plenty for all the family to see and do here. From watching live demonstrations, taking part in old fashioned street games, to visiting our vintage cinema and enjoying our traditional fish and chips, there’s something for everyone at Black Country Living Museum.

Until 2011 what we now call the Heritage trams operated the main Blackpool tram service between Starr Gate and Fleetwood, operating 362 days of the year. After the multi-million pound upgrade transformed the tramway into the light-rail system you see today, plans were made to retain a core selection of trams from the original system and return them to passenger carrying duties once more. The success of the heritage operation was such that in 2015 a small team of volunteers were recruited to complement the Blackpool Transport staff in crewing the trams. This allowed for a significant increase in service, enabling more people to take a trip on one of our magnificent vehicles! Our volunteer team has grown each year as we continue to increase the days and times we operate. We were especially proud when, in 2020, we were awarded the prestigious honour of the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the equivalent of an MBE for voluntary groups. You can read more about this here. The Fylde Transport Trust assists Blackpool Transport to help support the future of our Heritage Trams. This includes plans that will see more trams restored and brought back to operational condition, expanding our fleet and bringing the history of Blackpool alive on the promenade once more.

The Bluebell Railway is an 11 mi (17.7 km) heritage line almost entirely in West Sussex. It uses steam trains which operate between Sheffield Park and East Grinstead, with intermediate stations at Horsted Keynes and Kingscote. It is the first preserved standard gauge steam-operated passenger railway in the world to operate a public service. The society ran its first train on 7 August 1960, less than three years after the line from East Grinstead to Lewes had been closed by British Railways.

Our friendly volunteers are waiting to welcome you aboard and invite you to soak up the atmosphere of our award-winning heritage railway through the sights, sounds and smells of yesteryear. Take in the authentic railway buildings, get up close to a mighty steam engine and climb aboard a lovingly restored carriage. Listen for the whistles and watch for the green flag as you experience the ambience and nostalgia of a bygone era. The railway is also a popular film and TV location featured in The Railway Man, Outlander and many more productions. We also offer pre-booked afternoon tea and visitors can explore Scotland’s largest railway museum, The Museum of Scottish Railways.

Relax in style and enjoy a leisurely 13-mile round trip through beautiful Cornish countryside, taking in the sights, sounds and smells of a bygone age, as the era of a Cornish branch line in the 1950s reveals itself during the course of your journey. Trains operate from Bodmin General, the principal station where free coach and car parking is available, to both Bodmin Parkway station – where connections can be made directly with main line railway services – and Boscarne Junction.

The line, as preserved post-1974, includes two rope-worked inclines. These are the Blackhams Hill East and West inclines. Both are worked by the Blackhams Hill engine, a 300 h.p. Metropolitan Vickers engine commissioned on 30 July 1950. This engine works both the East or Flatt Incline (1170 yards at a gradient of 1 in 70) and the West or Short Bank (750 yards at a gradient 1 in 13). Over these inclines, the preserved railway demonstrates one of the oldest and most unusual types of railway operation. It is now the only place in Britain where this can be seen.

The line runs from Pant, 3 miles North of Merthyr Tydfil, to Torpantau following part of the route of the original Brecon & Merthyr Railway which closed in 1964. The journey takes you into the Brecon Beacons National Park, through Pontsticill and along the full length of the Taf Fechan Reservior before climbing to Torpantau high in the Brecon Beacons and the summit of the original line. At our main station in Pant you can visit our Licensed Tearooms for refreshments, gifts and souvenirs are available from our Shop. You can also visit our Workshop where the Steam Locomotives and Carriages are repaired. All trains travel non stop from Pant to Torpantau. All returning trains from Torpantau stop at our intermediate station in Pontsticill where you can visit our Lakeside Cafe, admire the view or go for walks alongside the reservoir, there is also a children's play area here.
