Bredgar & Wormshill Light Railway

Bredgar & Wormshill Light Railway

Bredgar, Sittingbourne,

The main objective of the railway is the preservation of steam locomotives in a form which enables railway enthusiasts, the general public and children to appreciate how important this type of energy was to industry for over 100 years. For obvious reasons the locomotives cannot be shown undertaking the industrial duties for which they were built but all have been restored to their original specifications and are run as part of small goods or passenger trains. To this end the passenger coaches have a period look and the collection of goods vehicles is varied. Warren Woods Station is situated near the main Hollingbourne to Sittingbourne road, about a mile south of Bredgar village. The station is the headquarters of the railway where the workshops, locomotive shed, tearoom and toilets are situated.

Bridgnorth Cliff Railway

Bridgnorth Cliff Railway

Bridgnorth, Shropshire,

It is first and foremost a working railway; its importance to both the townspeople of Bridgnorth and to visitors to the town is undiminished by age. The railway operates two cars on parallel tracks. Connected by steel ropes, the carriages serve to counterbalance each other – as one rises to the top station, the other runs to the bottom station. The cars are now powered by an electric winding engine, but were originally driven by a system of water balance, each carriage carrying water ballast in a tank beneath the passenger compartment.

Bure Valley Railway

Bure Valley Railway

Aylsham, Norfolk,

The Bure Valley Railway runs between the historic market town of Aylsham, and Wroxham, at the heart of the Norfolk Broads. It is built on the trackbed of the former Great Eastern Railway between Wroxham and Aylsham. Originally opened in 1880 the line survived for passenger traffic until 1952, eleven years before the infamous Beeching Report. The line did, however, survive for the purpose of carrying freight, a role it performed until the line was formally closed by British Rail in 1982. On 10th July 1990 the Bure Valley Railway was reopened as a narrow gauge railway.
