Sentinel Shunter Driver Experience. This is a must for anyone who always wanted to be a Train Driver!

Well here's an amazing experience to do just that, come along and drive  (under instruction) our Sentinel engine. Our Sentinel came from Daw Mill in 1993, it is powered by a Rolls Royce 8 cylinder supercharged engine, has 325 brake horse power and capable of hauling 1500 tonne. If you like power this engine ticks the boxes. The experience begins at Stanhope Station (DL13 2YS) where you will meet the team, enjoy a cuppa and listen to a safety brief and a little more about the Sentinel. Once the formalities are done, you will be in the hands of our Driver who will take you through the controls and undertake a short test run just to get the feel of the engine, then we will set off down to Broadwood River Bridge approx. 3 miles down the track. On returning to Stanhope there will be time to take some photographs and you receive a memento of your experience.

A half-day or evening with an experienced crew aboard the footplate!

Our bronze experience gives you a taste of driving and firing during two return journey over the full length of our picturesque line from Sheringham and Holt. Climb aboard a steam engine (on its own, without a train) and take the controls under the guidance of an experienced crew. You will alternate between driving and firing, spending 11 miles doing each and learning about the workings of the engine and the railway. The bronze experience is offered on several dates throughout the year usually starting at 9.45, 12.45 or 16.45. We are able to accommodate 2 participants on each session. Your experience begins at Sheringham with a welcoming drink and a slice of cake before participants join the driver and fireman on the footplate of the locomotive. At the end of the session each participant is awarded a certificate as a souvenir of the experience. Arrive at Stanhope Station for a meet, greet and safety brief before boarding our Pacer train whose windows offer unparalleled  panoramic views of the dale. Departing Stanhope we head for arguably one of the best vistas (our opinion) on the railway. The experience lasts approx. four hours, with a number of opportunities to shoot the amazing natural beauty and industrial heritage along the Weardale Railway. We said this is a unique experience and here is why, you will be allowed to alight the train at six strategic points on the route to allow you to safely take photographs. You should be aware that the experience means you will be climbing on and off the train so a reasonable level of fitness is required, you can remain on the train and we will work with you to get the best shots. Whether you're a budding or experienced photographer this is a must for you!!!
