Come and join us for one of our Signalling Experience Days. This exciting day offers the chance to take part in the signalling of our regular service trains on selected dates throughout the year. BRONZE SIGNALLING EXPERIENCE Under the close supervision of your dedicated box host and signalmen, you will have the opportunity to operate the signal levers which control the points and signals as trains arrive and depart from our Holt terminus station. Your experience day will include an introduction to signalling principles, instruction of signalling techniques and practical signalling experience. Before you attend your experience day, we will send you a copy of our Signalling Principles information guide, so that you can swat up and sound like a pro before you go! Along with a full day experience running between 9am – 5pm participants will receive lunch prepared by the North Norfolk Railway and a certificate of participation, which will be presented at the end of the day. Please note, the course does NOT include overnight accommodation. SILVER SIGNALLING EXPERIENCE Our in – depth ‘SILVER’ Signal Experience weekend will give you a greater insight into the signalling function. On the first day, a dedicated Signalling Inspector, will instruct you on the principles of signalling, followed by visits to all three signal boxes along the line. You will spend the second day in a signalbox, signalling trains supervised by the duty signalman, putting in to practice what you have learned. Sentinel Shunter Driver Experience. This is a must for anyone who always wanted to be a Train Driver!

Well here's an amazing experience to do just that, come along and drive  (under instruction) our Sentinel engine. Our Sentinel came from Daw Mill in 1993, it is powered by a Rolls Royce 8 cylinder supercharged engine, has 325 brake horse power and capable of hauling 1500 tonne. If you like power this engine ticks the boxes. The experience begins at Stanhope Station (DL13 2YS) where you will meet the team, enjoy a cuppa and listen to a safety brief and a little more about the Sentinel. Once the formalities are done, you will be in the hands of our Driver who will take you through the controls and undertake a short test run just to get the feel of the engine, then we will set off down to Broadwood River Bridge approx. 3 miles down the track. On returning to Stanhope there will be time to take some photographs and you receive a memento of your experience.

We are able to offer a one day course, designed to get you behind the controls of one of our unique narrow gauge steam locomotives.

The North Norfolkman luxury dining train runs on selected lunchtimes. Enjoy a complimentary locally-produced drink on arrival – choose from ale, lager, cider or apple juice – all made within the County. A half-day course featuring TWO complete round trips over the full length of our line on one of our impressive steam locomotives!

Our silver experience gives you the opportunity to have two complete round trips over the full length of our picturesque line working one of our magnificently-restored steam locomotives at the head of a train between Sheringham and Holt. You will drive one trip and fire one trip spending 11 miles doing each. You will learn about the workings of the engine and the operation of our railway under the guidance of our fully qualified crew. This package is offered on several dates throughout the year and we take two participants and their guests on each half-day experience. The morning session begins at Sheringham at 9.00 where participants are welcomed with a bacon roll and mug of tea before meeting the engine crew and climbing aboard the footplate for two full round trips with a private train of passenger carriages to Holt and back. There’s then time for a light lunch before catching the train to Weybourne for a guided tour of the Engine and Carriage Sheds before returning to Sheringham. The session ends the presentation of a certificate as a souvenir of the day. Participants may bring up to six guests to spectate (they will not be able to ride on the footplate) but they arrive at 11.00am travel in one of the carriages on the train, enjoy lunch and join the guided tour. Guests are charged at £25 each. Afternoon sessions start at 12.30 at Sheringham for participants and their guests. After checking in, you will travel by train to Weybourne to take a look behind the scenes on a tour of the Engine and Carriage Sheds. After travelling back to Sheringham, participants will meet the engine crew on the footplate followed by the chance to drive and fire the locomotive hauling a private train of passenger carriages during two return trips to Holt. Guests can ride in one of the carriages of the train during the first of these trips and have free time in Sheringham while participants complete the second run. A half-day or evening with an experienced crew aboard the footplate!

Our bronze experience gives you a taste of driving and firing during two return journey over the full length of our picturesque line from Sheringham and Holt. Climb aboard a steam engine (on its own, without a train) and take the controls under the guidance of an experienced crew. You will alternate between driving and firing, spending 11 miles doing each and learning about the workings of the engine and the railway. The bronze experience is offered on several dates throughout the year usually starting at 9.45, 12.45 or 16.45. We are able to accommodate 2 participants on each session. Your experience begins at Sheringham with a welcoming drink and a slice of cake before participants join the driver and fireman on the footplate of the locomotive. Take your seats in our first class carriage, Martha, before the train departs for a 55 minute round trip through the Avon Valley. First you’ll head north to our station at Oldland Common. Next you’ll travel back south onto the more scenic part of your journey to our station at Avon Riverside before returning to Bitton. At either end of the line you’re welcome to disembark and watch the locomotive running round to the other end of the train.
