Travel in style this summer with our new First Class Experience ticket. Take your seats in our first class carriage, Martha, before the train departs for a 55 minute round trip through the Avon Valley. First you’ll head north to our station at Oldland Common. Next you’ll travel back south onto the more scenic part of your journey to our station at Avon Riverside before returning to Bitton. At either end of the line you’re welcome to disembark and watch the locomotive running round to the other end of the train. During the journey, our First Class Steward will offer you a choice of cakes served with tea or coffee. Our five day course provides a real insight into the enginemen’s art!

The Gold Driver Experience course runs over five consecutive days from Monday to Friday and is based at our locomotive workshops at Weybourne. The course starts with two days in the classroom learning about locomotive theory and method of working on the railway. The third day is practical experience of preparation of the loco followed by two days on the footplate out on our line – one with a light engine (a locomotive without carriages) and one hauling a train. Lunch will be provided and the days will be from 9:00 to 4:30. This package is offered on several dates throughout the year and we take just four participants on each course. Arrive at Stanhope Station for a meet, greet and safety brief before boarding our Pacer train whose windows offer unparalleled  panoramic views of the dale. Departing Stanhope we head for arguably one of the best vistas (our opinion) on the railway. The experience lasts approx. four hours, with a number of opportunities to shoot the amazing natural beauty and industrial heritage along the Weardale Railway. We said this is a unique experience and here is why, you will be allowed to alight the train at six strategic points on the route to allow you to safely take photographs. You should be aware that the experience means you will be climbing on and off the train so a reasonable level of fitness is required, you can remain on the train and we will work with you to get the best shots.
