1940s Weekend

Great Central Railway, Loughborough,

Experience the sights, sounds and spirit of wartime Britain at the Great Central Railway’s 1940s Weekend. Enjoy live music, dancing, re-enactors, vintage vehicles and more at this immersive historical event.

Step into 1945 and experience a vivid recreation of Britain during the final days of the Second World War. The Great Central Railway's period stations will be transformed into bustling scenes from the 1940s, bringing to life the resilience, humour and character of those who lived through the era.

Over 160 re-enactors will be spread across the line, portraying everyone from naval officers and Land Army girls to shopkeepers, evacuees and ordinary civilians doing their bit. Expect lively conversations, historical insights and a good dose of cheeky 1940s banter.

Live music will set the tone, with performances from well-known wartime entertainers. The popular Shirls Girls fashion show returns with humour, storytelling and period style. Comic duo Royal Air Face will be on hand to lift the spirits with their light-hearted take on wartime life.

Visitors will be able to join in with dance lessons, learning the Lindy Hop and Jitterbug just like people did at village halls and service canteens. Rothley station will be the place to browse a wide range of vintage stalls offering original clothing, homeware and collectables.

Across the railway, historic vehicles will be on display. From military trucks and motorcycles to civilian classics and wartime commercials, these machines add realism to the already immersive scenes. A traditional street party will bring people together with bunting, music, dancing and singalongs that capture the joy and relief of the time.

On one evening, a free open-air event will feature a live band and an outdoor bar, creating a relaxed and atmospheric end to the day's activities.

Interactive exhibits throughout the railway will include ration books, ID cards and other hands-on displays that help tell the story of everyday life during the war. This is a weekend of reflection, celebration and living history, honouring the courage of the past and the brighter future that followed.

Early bird tickets are available now, and children with a Golden Ticket from the Santa Express can attend free of charge.
