Weardale Railway

Weardale Railway operates between Bishop Auckland and Stanhope, a distance of 16 miles. The remaining 3 miles of the line are currently non-operational. Intermediate stations are located at Frosterley, Kingfisher (request stop), Wolsingham and Witton-le-Wear. Seasonal passenger services are operated using a mixture of heritage DMUs and Pacer units, with occasional appearances by Class 31 locomotives. The journey offers excellent views of the outstanding Weardale scenery and crosses the River Wear several times. There are plans to reintroduce steam-hauled services in the future using Weardale Railway Trust's NCB No. 40, which is currently undergoing restoration. Platform 1 Cafe is open from Wednesday to Sunday, and on all days when trains are running, from 10:00 to 16:00. The Trust Shop and the Platform 2 Craft Market are also open on running days.
