South Downs Light Railway
South Downs Light Railway
The South Downs Light Railway is a 10 1/4-inch gauge miniature railway running through the grounds of Pulborough Garden Centre in West Sussex. Trains operate from March to September and are usually hauled by genuine coal-fired steam locomotives, offering great fun for both adults and children. Since opening in 2000, we have carried thousands of passengers on a scenic journey of just under a mile. The line features a tunnel, cutting, and a series of purpose-built structures that continue to develop year by year. Recent improvements include a new station and ticket office, a larger carriage shed, and a new engine shed. The tunnel portals were added in 2017, our turntable was reinstated in 2021, and a new water tower with a coal bunker is currently under construction. We are proud to be celebrating twenty-five years of operation in 2025 - a milestone marked by the publication of a new book detailing the railway's history and its earlier predecessors, the Cheals Garden Railway and the Riverview Miniature Railway.
