East Lancashire Railway

The East Lancashire Railway's history is closely tied to the industry of the region. Once vital for transporting raw materials, goods, and workers, the line also carried holidaymakers seeking leisure in the countryside. Today, under the care of the East Lancashire Light Railway Company and East Lancashire Railway Trust, much of it is preserved and operated by dedicated volunteers. The 12-mile route runs from Heywood to Rawtenstall, with intermediate stations at Bury, Burrs Country Park, Summerseat, Ramsbottom, and Irwell Vale. Each stop offers something different, from market towns and museums to riverside walks and country parks. Visitors can hop on and off to explore at their own pace. The line is home to both steam and heritage diesel locomotives, with a year-round calendar of events. Highlights include the famous Santa Express, dining trains, and themed experiences for all ages. The Bury Transport Museum adds to the attraction, with exhibitions telling the story of local transport heritage. With the support of its volunteers and community, the East Lancashire Railway continues to grow and improve, ensuring this living piece of history will remain for future generations.
