Explore the historic Princes Risborough North Signal Box and discover the fascinating world of traditional railway signalling. Enjoy a guided visit with our volunteers, learn about the restoration project and see the railway from a signalman's perspective.

The traditional railway signal box, once immortalised by Charles Dickens, is fast disappearing from the UK's railways. Princes Risborough North Signal Box once controlled railways radiating to every point of the compass and today it is the largest former Great Western Railway signal box still standing. After many years out of use and in a state of serious disrepair, it is now being carefully restored by C&PRR volunteers. Restoration work has included replacing more than 200 panes of broken glass, constructing a replica external staircase and recreating the signal box nameplates, which are now proudly displayed. During your visit, you will be able to see the progress made so far, learn about the history of the signal box and hear about plans for its future. Volunteers will be on hand throughout the day to answer questions and provide guided tours. You will also have the opportunity to view the railway from a signalman's perspective and discover how traditional mechanical signalling helped keep trains running safely. Visitor Information * Access is via the restored Platform 4 at Princes Risborough railway station. * On arrival at the main station entrance, cross the footbridge to Platform 3 and follow the signs to Platform 4. * There is a rough footpath between Platform 4 and the signal box, together with a steep external staircase, so sturdy footwear is recommended. * Visitor numbers inside the signal box may be limited at busy times, so a short wait may occasionally be necessary. *Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. *Please keep well clear of the platform edge, as fast trains pass through Princes Risborough station. *Signalman's railway tea, coffee, and biscuits will be available during your visit. *Admission is free, although donations towards the ongoing restoration project are always welcome. Please note that no Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway heritage trains will be operating on Saturday 11 July 2026. This allows us to provide safe public access to the signal box. Our five day course provides a real insight into the enginemen’s art!

The Gold Driver Experience course runs over five consecutive days from Monday to Friday and is based at our locomotive workshops at Weybourne. The course starts with two days in the classroom learning about locomotive theory and method of working on the railway. The third day is practical experience of preparation of the loco followed by two days on the footplate out on our line – one with a light engine (a locomotive without carriages) and one hauling a train. Lunch will be provided and the days will be from 9:00 to 4:30. This package is offered on several dates throughout the year and we take just four participants on each course.
